Water Resources To Partner NASS For Water Management Law

todaySeptember 13, 2023

Background

Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation is to partner the National Assembly and stakeholders to expedite passage of legislation on water management in Nigeria.

The minister, Professor Joesph Utsev stated this during a familiarization visit to the Nigeria Integrated Water Resources Management Commission, NIWRMC, an agency under the ministry.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Head, Press and Public Relations Unit of the ministry, Mrs Funmi Imuetinyan in Abuja.

According to the statement Professor Utsev stresses that the legislation on water management when passed into law will regulate the framework for the Water Resources Sector through the provision of equitable and sustainable development, management, use and conservation of Nigeria’s surface and ground water.

The statement therefore pledges commitment to the Water Resources Management and promised to assist the commission in realizing its mandate by ensuring management of safe and sustainable water for all Nigerians.

On his part, the Minister of State for water resources and sanitation, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, commended NIWRMC’s achievements despite limited funding and policy issues.

Goronyo emphasized that the visit aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda and sought the Commission’s support and guidance in fulfilling the mandate.

Earlier, the Executive Director of NIWRMC, Bashir Magashi stressed the need for increased budgetary allocations to enable the Commission effectively manage Water Resources and enforce proper regulations.

He highlighted the Commission’s accomplishments, to include license issuance, demand notices, and license revalidation, despite challenges posed by vested interests.

He underscored the importance of ensuring that users of raw bulk water pay the appropriate charges for commercial use to bolster revenue.
