Nigeria To Host 2024 African Military Games

In a bid to enhance Military Cooperation in Africa, the Military is leveraging sporting activities to boost collaborations and interactions amongst member states.

To this end plans for the second edition of the African Military Games, a multi-sport event exclusively for military personnel, organized by International Military Sports Council are underway.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, the Director of Sports Defence Headquarters, Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Marquis who stated that Nigeria would be hosting this edition come November next year explained that military teams from various countries are expected to participate in the event.

Air Vice Marshal Marquis further explained that aside from the African Military Games, the Chief of Defence Armed Forces Half Marathon and Armed Forces of Nigeria and other Security Half Marathon are also underway in November this year to
showcase not only athletic prowess but also the spirit of camaraderie and cooperation among the Armed Forces.

The Director of Sports Defence Headquarters who noted that the half marathon will cover over twenty kilometers and participants would be drawn from the Armed Forces and other Paramilitary agencies said there are prizes to be won including a car donated by a foremost indigenous automobile company.

He stressed that these sporting activities while bringing together military personnel from around the world were geared towards promoting peace, friendship, and understanding among nations.

On his part the President of the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa, OSMA who doubles as Vice President of the International Military Sports Council, Major General Maikano Abdullahi said the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa approved the game after OSMA gave the hosting rights to Nigeria during the 7th OSMA General Assembly in Sierra Leone.

He added that the games would feature a diverse range of sporting disciplines, including athletics, swimming, shooting, and martial arts, among others.
