2023 WWC: England Meets Spain in Finals

Background

The three Lioness of England have for the first time in their history secured a FIFA Women’s World Cup final slot as they beat co-host Australia 3-1 in Sydney’s Olympic Stadium.

With a record crowd of 75,784 fans in attendance, the semifinal clash only took 10 minutes to burst into life, as England Midfielder Georgia Stanway volley was poked out by goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold.

Ella Toone finally broken the deadlock in the 36 minute, giving Sarina Wiegman ladies the lead going into the half time.

The second half saw Australia throw everything they had at England with star striker Sam Kerr  who started her first match of the tournament  scoring a 25-yard stunner over goalkeeper Mary Earps’ head to make it 1-1.

But The three Lioness refusing to be denied three times in a row after previous losses to Japan and USA in back to back semifinals, found a way back into the game when Lauren Hemp pounced on a defensive error to restore their lead.

Arsenals Alessia Russo made sure to seal a victory late on to set up a final with Spain on Sunday and destroyed the co-hosts’ attempts to create history.

  • This victory makes the 2022 European champions the first England football team since 1966 to reach a senior final on the world stage.
  • For Australia, this makes them the third host country to reach the semifinals of the women’s world cup.

  • Sarina Wiegman is the first manager to lead two different countries to a word cup final ( Netherlands 2019 and now England 2023).
