Olympic champion Alexander Zverev has claimed his first title since returning from a severe ankle injury when he beat Serbia’s Laslo Djere 7-5 6-3 in the European Open final in his birth town of Hamburg.
Fourth seed Zverev prevailed after one hour 50 minutes on Sunday to become the first German since Michael Stich in 1993 to lift the Hamburg trophy in front of a 10,000-strong crowd.
Playing in his first final at the Rothenbaum tennis centre, Zverev saved four break points at 4-4 and then took the opening set when he clinched a 12th-game break with a lob.

In the second, Zverev broke en route to a 4-1 lead but 57th-ranked Djere broke back for 4-3.
Zverev was undeterred, breaking again in the eighth game before serving out the match for his 20th career title and his first since the 2021 ATP Finals.
World number 1 Iga Swiatek dropped only one game in her 68-minute Poland Open final win over Laura Siegemund.
It was the fourth title of the season for Swiatek, and the 15th of her career.

Siegemund will make a big jump in the world rankings after her final run in Poland. Both Swiatek and her beaten opponent had to overcome a backlog of matches after adverse weather during the event.
