Members of the bar in Kogi state have been charged to avoid filing frivolous applications that may cause unnecessary delay in court proceedings.

The President Court of Appeal Abuja, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa gave the charge at the special session of the Court of Appeal in Lokoja, Kogi State.

Justice Bulkachuwa said lawyers should avoid inappropriate briefs from clients no matter how lucrative, for a smooth session of the court within the two week stipulated time frame to dispense cases in Lokoja.

According to her, the special session was meant to reduce hardship occasioned by litigants to seek justice in Abuja as well as attend to backlog of cases before the court.

The President, Court of Appeal said that about one hundred and ninety- eight appeals consisting of one hundred and fifty civil appeals and motions, with forty-eight criminal appeals will be dispensed by the eleven Justices of the Court at the inaugural session in Lokoja.

Radio Nigeria correspondent Segun Oyeniebi reports that,  in his speech, Kogi state chief judge, Just Nasir Ajanah urged Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa to grant the request for the establishment of the division of the Court of Appeal in the State towards expeditious hearing of appeal cases in the state.

Justice Ajanah expressed appreciation to the President, Court of Appeal and the Chief Justice of Nigeria for their continued assistance which recently led to the conferment of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, on six indigenes of Kogi state which included the state Attorney General for Justice Ibrahim Mohammed SAN among others
