Edo/Ondo Polls: Security Agencies Urged To Step Up Operations, Ensure Peaceful Elections

Security agencies in the country have been advised to beef up their operations to ensure peaceful and credible governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states.

Guests on “Politics Today”  Kapital Fm Current Affairs Programme made the call in Abuja.

One of the guests, Former Chairman Alliance National Party and Presidential Candidate, Mr Asiwaju  Shittu appealed to security agencies to step-up their security apparatus in the states to help reduce incidents of Electoral violence as well as ensure free, fair and credible elections in the states.

“With what is happening now and what happened in the 2019 General elections, we met with the leadership of INEC and police to review the security of the states affected by Electoral violence ”

He explained that to Reduce incidences of Electoral fraud and malpractices in the states, there must be more funding of the judiciary as well as amend the Electoral laws of the land.

“Government should invest in the rule of law and good governance ”

Mr Asiwaju appealed to the media to be sensitive and objective their reportage to ensure accuracy and fairness.

“Our media, is a very sensitive area, with what is going on, we had a series of meetings with INEC that somethings have to be put in place, before, during and after elections.

It may not be open to the public, because series of meetings have to go on so that there would be no crisis in the elections.

Another Guests, Deputy National Youth Leader, Young Progressive Party Owoyombo Solomon, while commending the efforts of the civil society organisations in ensuring credible elections advocated for more enlightenment campaigns on the dangers of Electoral violence and malpractices in the in the nation’s electoral process.

“The civil society has been doing their best I think their best is not good enough, they need more hands, the electorate need to be educated”

He therefore urged the National Orientation Agency to step up its game before the elections not just during elections.

In his contributions, A caller Mr Martin expressed concerns over low voter education and sensitization campaigns for the electorates adding that the National Orientation Agency was not doing enough.
