Breaking : Bandits Kill Ex-Zamfara Governorship Aspirant
A former gubernatorial aspirant in the 2019 election in Zamfara State, Alh. Sagir Hamidu, has been killed by bandits along Abuja-Kaduna expressway.
The late politician, who was the proprietor of FAMAKS British Schools in Abuja and Kaduna, had vied for governorship on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
He was shot dead by the attackers when they opened fire on travelers near Rijana along the busy expressway around 4pm on Sunday.
Security sources who preferred anonymity confirmed the death to Daily Nigerian saying “he was among those hit by the kidnappers bullets”.
The sources said many passengers who attempted to run were fired at, while those who cooperated were shepherded into the bush.
A survivor who preferred not to be named said the incident occurred around Rijana area.
The kidnappers took advantage of the damage on the road, which forced on and off-coming motorists to move slowly on a single lane,” he said.
Spokesman for the Kaduna State Police Command Mohammed Jalige did not respond to our reporter’s call at the time of filing this report.
Sagir Hamidu, an Abuja-based businessman and former director in the federal civil service, aspired for the governorship of Zamfara under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2011 but lost at the party’s primary election.
He later defected to the APC and vied for the governorship position in 2019 but was allegedly short-changed by the former governor Abdulaziz Yari-led APC in the state from where he joined seven other aspirants to form the G-8 which protested and fought the Yari group up to the Supreme Court.
