Airport Toll Gates Go Cashless As FAAN Curbs Revenue Leakages

todayMarch 3, 2026

Background

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, says it has fully enforced electronic payment systems across the Nation’s airports in a bid to eliminate revenue leakages and improve financial accountability.

Speaking with Newsmen after appearing before the House of Representatives Committee on Finance, FAAN Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Olubunmi Kuku, said the authority has deployed electronic systems to ensure that all revenues generated at airport toll gates and other collection points are captured and remitted to the federal government without leakages.

“The committee chaired by James Faleke, is conducting a revenue monitoring exercise covering the 2023–2025 fiscal years to assess remittances by government agencies.”

She described the move as part of the federal government’s broader fiscal reform agenda aimed at strengthening transparency and boosting internally generated revenue across ministries, departments and agencies.

Although the rollout has led to temporary traffic congestion at some airport toll gates, Kuku said the disruption reflects an adjustment phase and would ease as more users adopt electronic payment options.

“This initiative is about accountability and sustainability,” “We are ensuring that every kobo due to the federal government is collected without leakages, while also improving operational efficiency.”
She said

According to her, preparations for the transition began in mid-2025, including public sensitization campaigns and stakeholder engagement. Full enforcement commenced on Sunday following renewed directives to strengthen revenue collection.

Kuku said the policy eliminates cash transactions but does not limit users to a single payment method.

Available options include annual e-tags for frequent users, VIP stickers for approved motorists, personal ATM cards including contactless or NFC-enabled cards, and FAAN-issued cashless cards obtainable within airport premises and through partner banks.

She encouraged airport users to obtain contactless-enabled cards from their banks to reduce transaction time and confirmed that domestic payment cards such as Verve are compatible with the system.

Kuku said improved revenue collection would enhance service delivery, infrastructure maintenance and long-term airport modernization projects nationwide.
