The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has called on the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to brace up and upscale prompt intelligence in the discharge of its statutory mandate to enhance the nation’s security architecture.
The Minister made the call in Abuja at the Decoration Ceremony of the newly promoted personnel of the corps.
Represented by the Secretary of the Civil Defence, Corrections, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), Retired Major General Abdulmalik Jibrin, the minister applauded efforts of the NSCDC in enhancing national security through the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure reiterating the need to map out intelligence strategies to confront emerging threats to peace and national development.
Reflecting on the additional responsibility of protection of Very Important Personalities (VIP) formerly bestowed on the Nigeria Police, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo charged the newly promoted senior officers and the entire personnel of the Corps to justify the confidence reposed in the Service by the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He noted that the senior officer’s promotion, which was merit-based, is aimed at boosting their morale for effective discharge of duties, most especially as all the services in the ministry had suffered stagnation in the past.
The Minister assured all personnel that the Board is ready to grant requests that would translate to outstanding performance and diligence to duty.
Earlier in his remarks, the NSCDC Commandant General, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi tasked the officers on the need to mentor their subordinates, calling on them to embrace the new leadership tasks ahead of them.
He assured them of timely redeployment and cautioned against intentions to lobby for ‘juicy’ postings, adding that his administration is meticulous and will allow merit and performance to guide the entire process.
Responding on behalf of the newly promoted officers, Commandant Ekanem Ikponmwosa Ekpenyong pledged to consistently ensure delivery of their duties with integrity, adhering to the Oath of Allegiance.
Highlights of the event was decoration of the Corps’ National Public Relations Officer to his new rank as Assistant Commandant of the Corps by the Commandant General and goodwill messages by the Controller General of Corrections and CG Federal Fire Service, and the representatives of the Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, Chief of Air Staff, Inspector General of Police, and Director General of the Department of State Services .
