University Don Highlights Roles Of Alumni In Educational Development

Background

Government Commercial College, Zaria, Class of 1979 has reunited after 46 years of graduation. The reunion which took place in Abuja featured lecture, health talks, Annual General Meeting, AGM, dinner among other varieties.

Delivering the Reunion Lecture, the Guest Speaker from Political Science Department, University of Abuja, Prof. Abubakar Sadiq Abba called for unity of purpose among the Alumni.

Prof. Sadiq Abba whose lecture centered on benefits and challenges of Alumni highlighted the importance of Alumni Association and stressed the need for Class ’79 of Government Commercial College, Zaria to effectively harness the potentials of all Alumni towards improving their lots and that of their Alma Mater.

According to him, the benefits of Alumni is both vertical and horizontal which include building of infrastructures in their Alma Mater through institutional support while they also have various responsibilities to themselves as individual and their communities as well as the nation in general.

He therefore called on Alumni Associations to always compliment the efforts of Government in developing the nation’s education sector.

In his words “This they can do by institutionalizing scholarship for the less privileged, construction of classrooms, provision of books and instructional materials, institutionalize the best teacher of the year, promote productivity and professionalism, construction of school clinic among other projects that can fast track the growth of education in the country”.

While congratulating them for being alive to reunite after 46 years of graduation , Prof. Sadiq Abba emphasized the need for them to come up with functional and effective leaders that would pilot the affairs of its Alumni.

An Alumnus of the College and Dean, Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo, Oyo State, Dr. Mrs Folashade Abiola expressed joy for the reunion after 46 years of graduation g from Government Commercial College, Zaria saying they are determined to work together towards ensuring the wellbeing of one another.

Dr. Mrs Folashade Abiola also expressed their readiness to contribute to the educational growth of their Alma Mater.

On his part, Mr John Ibrahim who is also an Alumnus of the College was elated for seeing his school mates after over four decades from Government Commercial College, Zaria.

Mr John Ibrahim who is a Retired Staff of Ministry of Finance, Kaduna promised to contribute his quota towards realizing the objectives of the reunion.

The reunion programme of activities that lasted for three days in the Federal Capital Territory saw alumni winding and dining as well as sharing ideas on the way forward as a family.
