Reps Adjourn Plenary To Address Budget Implementation, Contractors Payment Delays

todayNovember 4, 2025

Background

The House of Representatives has adjourned plenary for one week to support ongoing engagements aimed at ensuring smooth implementation of the national budget and resolving concerns raised by local contractors over delayed payments for executed projects.

Addressing Parliamentary reporters at the National Assembly, the House Spokesman, Mr Akin Rotimi said the decision was taken in good faith and reflected the 10th Assembly’s commitment to effective governance and collaboration with the executive arm of government.

Rotimi who is also Chairman house Committee on Media and Public Affairs explained that the plenary, presided over by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, began normally before lawmakers moved into an executive session to deliberate on national matters requiring urgent attention.

“One of the key issues discussed,” he said, “was the concern expressed by some indigenous contractors about delays in payments for completed projects and the implementation of the 2024 and 2025 capital budgets.”

Rotimi noted that the House adopted a motion moved by the Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, urging the executive to expedite payments to local contractors and ensure prompt commencement of the 2025 capital projects.

He said another motion moved by
Kabiru Mai-Palace
was passed to suspend plenary for one week, allowing the leadership of the House to engage key ministries and agencies for constructive dialogue and intervention.

“This one-week period will provide room for deeper consultation between the legislature and the executive to ensure effective budget implementation and sustained national development,”
Rotimi said.

The spokesman stressed that the decision was consistent with the House’s resolve to promote harmony between the arms of government and to make sure Nigerians feel the positive impact of government programmes.

“Our focus is to see that the budget of Mr. President is fully implemented under the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he added.

Rotimi also assured that the temporary suspension would not affect the January–December budget cycle, noting that the House remains committed to the timely consideration of the 2026 Appropriation Bill once presented.

He commended members of the House Press Corps for their professionalism and urged continued collaboration for balanced and accurate reporting of parliamentary activities.

“Everything we are doing is in response to the aspirations of Nigerians who want tangible results from government policies, “The House will continue to act in the national interest and ensure that development reaches every part of the country.” he said
