The House of Representatives Committee on Youths in Parliament says that the tax reform is inevitable, stressing that young people are disproportionately affected by taxation policies.
Chairman of the Committee, Ayodeji Alao-Akala who made the remarks at the National Youth Dialogue on Tax Reform Bills, held at the National Assembly, Abuja emphasized that delaying tax reforms would be detrimental.
Alao-Akala noted that most low-income earners in Nigeria are youths struggling to start businesses, rent homes, or make financial progress.
According to him, the proposed tax reforms aim to ease this burden by ensuring fairer policies that support entrepreneurship and economic independence.
“If we get it right with the youth, we get it right with the country”.
Alao-Akala urged young Nigerians to contribute meaningful ideas to the bill.
Declaring the public hearing open, speaker of the house, Dr Abbass Tajudeen assured the various youth groups that their inputs would be factored into the review of the proposals ahead of their passage by the Parliament.
Represented by Leke Abejide, a member from Kogi State, the Speaker lauded the bills describing them as catalysts of economic growth and national progress.
The National Youth Dialogue on Tax Reform Bills was attended by various youth groups, who threw their weight behind the proposed law, stressing that the review of the nation’s tax laws has become necessary to address contemporary challenges in fiscal policies.
