The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar 111 has called on stakeholders in the transport sector to join hands with the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC in checking road crashes resulting in lose of lives and property especially accidents involving tankers.
The Sultan made the call while receiving the FRSC Corps Marshal, Mallam Shehu Mohammed who was on a visit to his Palace in Sokoto.
Alhaji Saad said cases of violation of traffic rules such as overloading, mixed loading, dangerous driving, and over speeding have become rampant among drivers and becoming worrisome.
The Sultan also called for diversification of mode of transportation as an antidote to the enormous loss of lives and property from crashes rising from high dependence on road transport instead of using railway as a means of transporting goods.
He stressed that using the railway system could save many lives as most of the goods being transported on roads could have been done using railway lines.
While congratulating the Corps Marshal on his appointment, the Sultan described it as well deserved, noting that the various steps he has taken so far to address the challenges facing road travels and the relative safety on the nation’s highways are indicative of his high level of preparedness for the assignment.
The Sultan, therefore, tasked personnel of the Corps to remain loyal and committed to their duties, to enable the nation to achieve the demands of meeting the target of crash reduction as set by the United Nations through the Decade of Action declarations.
Earlier, the Corps Marshal, Mallam Shehu Mohammed said he was in Sokoto State as part of his familiarization tour to the state and found it most imperative to pay homage to the palace to seek the fatherly support and blessings of the Royal father.
The Corps Marshal further noted that his determination to make the roads safer was in realignment with the renewed hope agenda of the administration of President Bola Tinubu whose development agenda has many road safety elements embedded in them.
The Corps Marshal praised the Sultan for his goodwill and support for the FRSC over the years, appealing to him to sustain the solidarity.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed thanked the good people of Sokoto state for the cordial relationship they had maintained with FRSC in the state, saying he appreciates the goodwill and will continue to consider infrastructural development within the Corps to enhance safety of road travelers in the state.
