Arsenal Begins The New Year With Away Victory In London Derby

Arsenal walked into the new year in style, bouncing back from an early goal deficit in a London derby to beat Brentford 3-1 away and move back into second place in the Premier League.

Brentford Community Stadium saw the home side take the lead through Bryan Mbeumo, but Gabriel Jesus, Mikel Merino and Gabriel Martinelli turned the match for the Gunners.

The Bees took the lead against the run of play in the 13th minute when Mbeumo finished off a swift counter-attack, firing past David Raya at his near post.

Arsenal responded well and scored an equalizer just before halftime. Mark Flekken parried Thomas Partey’s powerful strike, but Jesus reacted quickest and headed home from close range.

The Gunners came out firing in the second half and took the lead five minutes after the restart. Merino slammed home from close range following a corner, and just three minutes later, Martinelli arrowed in a fine half-volley following Ethan Nwaneri’s cross to leave Brentford stunned.

After his teams strong start to the year to keep their title hopes alive, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said his team executed heart and charterer to stay in the fight after trailing by goal just 13 minutes in the game.

Also speaking after the game, Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard said they knew it would be a tough game as Brentford isĀ  well organized.

“Brentford are a very physical and well-organized team, but we showed our quality in the second half. We are confident that we can challenge for the title this season.”

Meanwhile, Brentford manager Thomas Frank expressed disappointment with the outcome of the game as he felt his team was unable to withstand the offensive pressure by the Gunners

We started the game well and took the lead, but we didn’t defend well enough for their second goal. We need to learn from this and move on.”

The new year victory over Brentford was a crucial one for Arsenal in their title challenge. They are now just six points behind Liverpool with a game in hand, and they will be full of confidence heading into the rest of the season.
