The Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, Department of Development Control has halted ongoing illegal development at Apo zone E, Gudu District, describing it a contravention of the master plan.
Director of the Department, Mukhtar Galadima, who led the enforcement team to the area, said allowing unapproved structures in the city would lead to erosion that will result in flood.
Galadima, who also accompanied officials of the Parks and Recreation department to demolish an unauthorized park in the area, explained that records available showed that most of the structures were built without the consent of government, nor building approval.
According to Galadima, the structures were raised on green areas and water channels.
“During our normal weekly inspection today at Apo zone E, Gudu District, we discovered a strange development in the area, and we have stopped the work.”
“We will continue to monitor developments. Anybody that refuses to stop work will be arrested. ”
“Most of the buildings are on green areas and water channels. They can’t be allowed to stand. Others that have been completed will also be pulled down. If the illegality is allowed, it will cause erosion and flood. This will be dangerous.”
Corroborating, the Director Parks and Recreation Department, Federal Capital Territory Administration, Chinemelu Echee, said the administration will stop at nothing to reclaim green areas converted to other use.
He decried cutting of trees that the government had planted for over thirty years by those carrying out illegal development, saying such act must be stopped.
Echee said the administration was committed to mitigating climate change and global warming.
