Governor Oborevwori Swears In New Sports Commission Members

Background

A new dawn has set in the sporting atmosphere of Delta state, as His Excellency, Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, on Wednesday 4th December 2024, inaugurated the newly appointed members of the Sports Commission led by Onoriode Joshua Oborevwori, as the Chairman with former Super Eagles Player Sam Sodje as one of the three members of the board to administer sports in the State.

Governor Oborevwori swore in the new Sports Commission board at Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba. He urged them to adopt servant leadership and prioritize sports development across the state. The governor emphasized the importance of teamwork and mutual respect among the commission members.

“You have been chosen to serve the people of Delta State.

I urge you to demonstrate unwavering commitment to the welfare of our sportsmen and women by fostering an enabling environment for development.”

His Excellency, further tasked the board to align its efforts with his administration’s vision of enhancing the lives of Deltans through strategic sports initiatives.

Governor Oborevwori also warned that he would not fail to sanction any public official found wanting in the discharge of their duties or whose conduct is established to be at variance with the administration’s vision and mandate.

With the rich history of sports in Delta state much is expected from a state known as dominant force in Nigerian sports as they have won the National Sports Festival six times consecutively, with it’s recently triumph in the 21st National Sports Festival in Asaba 2022.

Not also forgetting that Delta State has won all editions of the National Youth Games since its inception in 2016. The 2024 National Youth Games marked their eighth consecutive victory in the competition.

Delta state also boasts of some of Nigerias greatest sports men and women, with the likes of  Legendary defender and coach, late Stephen Keshi, Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha, Sunday Oliseh,Oghenekaro Etebo. Olympic medalist like Blessing Okagbare, Ese Brume and Gloria Kemasuode. And also former 100 meters African record holder Olusoji Fasuba and Divine Oduduru among others

The newly appointed board led by Onoriode Joshua Oborevwori, includes r Sam Sodje, Oghale Ofremu, and Herrita Ehiabor.

The board has promised to revolutionize sports in order to contribute significantly to governor Oborevwori administration’s agenda.

The four appointees were experienced individuals who would contribute their expertise to the development of sports in the state.

Onoriode Joshua Oborevwori

Onoriode Joshua Oborevwori, a passionate advocate for grassroots football, has made significant contributions to the development of the sport, particularly in Delta State. As a former footballer himself, he understands the challenges and opportunities faced by aspiring athletes. His unwavering support for women’s football is evident in his role as the sole sponsor of the Delta Babes Football Club, a team he nurtured and empowered. Additionally, his involvement as an Allstars player showcased his commitment to the game at a competitive level.

Sam Sodje

Sam Okemuete Sodje, a towering figure in Nigerian football, is a retired professional footballer who graced the fields of both Nigeria and England. His illustrious career spanned several years, during which he represented renowned clubs in both countries. A key member of the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, from 2005 to 2009, Sodje’s contributions to Nigerian football are immeasurable. Currently, he serves as a valued member of the Delta State Football Association, actively involved in nurturing young talent and shaping the future of football in the state.

Henrietta Ehiabor

Henrietta Ehiabor, a visionary leader and passionate advocate for women’s football, served as the former Chairperson of Delta Queens FC. Under her astute guidance, Delta Queens FC achieved a historic milestone by clinching the coveted Nigerian Female Professional League championship title. Her strategic leadership, coupled with her unwavering commitment to women’s empowerment through sports, propelled the team to new heights of success.

Oghale Ofremu

Oghale Ofremu is the Chairman of a nationwide league one side, NLO1, and a club owner by a former sports commission member, Solomon Ogba.
