Federation Of Workers Cooperative Decries State Of Economy, Seeks More Interventions

todayMarch 6, 2024

Background

Government at all levels have been called upon to do more in alleviating the hardship of Nigerian workers in line with the present economic situation.

National President, Kaduna Federation of Workers Cooperative, Mr Abel Adamu stated this at the 2024 Cooperative societies summit held in Kaduna.

Mr Abel Adamu explained that the current economic reality of the country has increased the burden on most families of Nigerian workers which will affect productivity in no small measure.

He therefore appealed to Kaduna State Government to provide grants and loans to workers at a reduced interest rate to cushion effects of the economic hardship.

‘The hardship is so much that even the minimum wage cannot do much for anybody hence the need for government to come to the plight of the Nigerian worker”.

‘i am telling you, many people can barely eat or pay their children’s school fees but when you belong to a cooporative and you have some significant savings, you can withdraw and take care of your needs”, he said.

The National President aknowledged the efforts of president Bola Tinubu to address the economic issues but appealed for urgent and timely intervention.

In a remark, the Chief Registrar, Cooperative Department, Federal Ministry of Labor and Employment, Hajiya Saadatu Gusau stressed that the ministry had been training officials of cooperative societies on how to take advantage of the benefits that come with being a member.

Hajiya Saadatu therefore called on organizations and the general populace to always come together to form cooperative societies, pull resources and assist one another especially in the present economic situation.

“I call on all workers in Kaduna State to join the Cooperative Federation which has good prospects in protecting the interests of their members”, she added.

She called on banks not to tax accounts of cooperative societies, as members have already been taxed from source.

Earlier, Kaduna State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Professor Benjamin Kumai-Gugong emphasized that the state government was committed to the welfare of workers and assured commitment of the ministry to work with cooperative societies.

Professor Gugong called on the leadership of cooperatives to always maintain honesty and integrity in the discharge of their responsibilities.

The second cooperative summit with the theme ‘The Workers Cooperative, Opportunities in Present Day Economy”, was organized by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment in conjunction with the Institute of Cooperative Professionals of Nigeria.
