Reps Harp On International Collaboration To Curb Insecurity

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on National Security, Mr. Ahmed Satomi has emphasized the importance of international collaboration in addressing the security challenges facing Nigeria.

Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the committee in Abuja, Mr. Satomi highlighted the need to adopt the evolving nature of global security.

He acknowledged the unique security challenges confronting Nigeria, driven by rapid technological advancements, global interconnectedness, and complex geopolitical dynamics.

He stressed that the conventional approach to safeguarding the nation must be reevaluated and expanded to encompass various dimensions that impact the lives of Nigerian citizens.

Modern security extends beyond traditional borders and military might, now encompassing economic stability, cyber warfare, environmental resilience, social cohesion, and the protection of democratic institutions and “To truly address the challenges of the 21st century, we must adopt a holistic and inclusive approach.”

The Chairman further pointed out that national security should not be pursued at the expense of civil liberties and human rights.

He called for a delicate balance that preserves core values while ensuring the safety and well-being of the people and also stressed the importance of international collaboration in a world where no nation can stand alone against global threats.

He emphasised the need to strengthen alliances, deepen partnerships, and engage in meaningful dialogue with other nations.

The Chairman also stressed on harnessing the power of technology for the betterment of the nation while acknowledging that technological advancements have brought new vulnerabilities and threats.

Government’s duty is to harness innovations to strengthen intelligence capabilities, enhance cybersecurity infrastructure, and promote responsible data governance.

He proposed investing in research and development, fostering public-private partnerships, and engaging with experts in the field to keep Nigeria at the forefront of technological advancements and safeguard national interests.

Satomi who pledged to promote a culture of openness, where the Nigerian people are informed and engaged in matters of national security promised to ensure that intelligence agencies operate within the bounds of the law and protect citizens’ rights, highlighting the importance of rigorous oversight and responsible governance to build trust and maintain the integrity of democratic institutions.

He called on all committee members to join him on the journey of innovation, collaboration, and accountability, transcending partisan divides to safeguard the nation for generations to come.
