As the world marks World Humanitarian Day, the Nigeria Red Cross Society, NRCS, has called on Nigerians and the government to support its activities, especially its efforts to meet the needs of people in humanitarian crisis.

The National President of the Society, Mr. Adeaga Adetayo made the call in a statement signed by the Head Communication Cordinator and Advocacy unit of the organisation, Mr. Chima Nwankwo to commemorate this year’s world humanitarian day.

Mr. Adetayo who explains that the humanitarian efforts includes emergency responses, search and rescue, evacuations, disaster risk reduction, cash transfer programmes, helping those affected by armed conflict, reuniting family members who were missing, among others notes that humanitarian needs in Nigeria and around the world are enormous.

” The vital humanitarian work carried out by the Nigerian Red Cross Society is only possible with the support of compassionate individuals and organizations who believe in the power of humanity and collective action. By contributing to the Nigerian Red Cross Society, donors can directly impact the lives of those affected by emergencies, disasters, and conflicts throughout the country and the world at large.

Speaking on the theme of this year’s world humanitarian day, #NOMatterWhat# the National President commends the Eight hundred thousand, (800,000) Volunteers and staff who have consistently demonstrated their commitment to alleviating suffering, supporting communities and saving lives often at the risk of their safety.

“Between 2016 and 2022, according to the Aid Worker Security Database, 41 workers have been killed in north-east Nigeria. While 22 have been wounded and 28 kidnapped. Only 3 months ago, 5 aid workers were kidnapped in Apa, Benue State”.

According to him, the World Humanitarian Day is marked globally in recognition of humanitarian personnel and those who lost their lives while working for humanitarian causes.

“It is therefore important that Nigerians recognise the significance of the day while honouring those who have contributed and offered support toward humanitarian causes,” he said.

“This year, the Nigerian Red Cross Society draws attention to the theme #NoMatterWhat, which encapsulates the organization’s steadfast resolve to serve humanity relentlessly, even in the face of adversity.

The National President reaffirms the society’s unwavering commitment to the 7 fundamental principles of the Red Cross Red crescent Movement, humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence and voluntary service.

“On this World Humanitarian Day, let us come together under the banner of #NoMatterWhat, united in our commitment to humanity. Join hands with the Nigerian Red Cross Society and be a force for positive change and help avert the looming hunger crisis.
