Angel di Maria Joins Benfica

Argentina forward Angel di Maria has joined Benfica for the second time in his career.

Di Maria, 35, played for the Portuguese club between 2007-2010 when he first moved to Europe from Rosario in his native Argentina.

He spent last season with Italian side Juventus after seven years with French giants Paris St-Germain.

“Welcome home, Di Maria,” said the club in a video announcing his move, which is reportedly a one-year deal.

Di Maria won the Portuguese league and cup double in his last season with Benfica before moving to Real Madrid.

He will join close friend and compatriot Nicolas Otamendi, with whom he won the World Cup in Qatar last year.

France striker Mbappe, 24, has told PSG that he will not extend his contract with them beyond 2024.

“Our position is very clear,” said Al-Khelaifi.

“If Kylian Mbappe wants to stay – we want him to stay – he needs to sign a new contract.

“We cannot let the best player in the world right now leave for free. That is impossible.”

Luton Captain Signs New Deal

Also, Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer has signed a new contract of an undisclosed length before the club’s debut Premier League season.

The 28-year-old is beginning pre-season training on Thursday after an operation for a heart issue.

The defender, who skippered the team to promotion to the top flight last season, collapsed during the play-off final but has made a full recovery.

“I’d really like to build something special here at Luton,” Lockyer said.

“I’ve got an incredible relationship with the fans, the manager, all the boys. I love the club and I love being here.

“It’s incredible what we achieved last season. To have the chance to play with Luton in the Premier League will be something that’s really special to me.”

According to BBC Sports, Lockyer signed for Luton in 2020 and made his 100th appearance for the club in May. He was voted Luton’s 2022-23 player of the year, a campaign in which he made 45 appearances and scored five goals.
